The
fundraiser for Small Project #18 is
Johanna Keorlet of New Jersey.
Johanna writes:
I became interested in sponsoring a child when my daughter, Christina, began contributing her time to Aura's House. As a student and graduate of William Paterson University, she donates her skills by updating their website
regularly.
I read about the children and their families and the little
material possessions they live with from day to day. Their houses are
barely functional. They do not have enough money to buy beds, fans, or
clothes. When I saw pictures of the conditions they live in, it made me
feel ashamed of the abundance that I have. It seemed like such a small
amount of money to part with each month. We spend more on our cable
television bill and our internet services. Why not give to a child in need?
These families were born in a world without luxuries such as we experience
and take for granted. They have no way out without our help.
I chose Maria when she was nine years old, simply because I grew up in New
Jersey with friends who had migrated from the Dominican Republic. She
shared a birthday with my younger brother, Larry, who had passed away at the
age of 15 years old. She mentions in her bio that she loved baseball, like
my brother, and so I chose Maria in honor of his memory.
|
She writes to me periodically and seems so appreciative of the fact that I
am helping her and her family.I send her extra donations for Easter,
Christmas, and her birthday. The gratitude is always expressed in her
letters.I feel that I am an inspiration to her to care about herself and
her family because I am somewhere out here caring about her. That is enough
for me.
Please help Aura's house give Maria's family a bed, fans, clothes, and food by giving a small donation. After all the giving we have done for Christmas to our families, let us open our hearts once more by giving to those are truly in need. A child like Maria, her sister, her brother, and her parents. They will never be able to repay you, but they will be more grateful than anyone can imagine.
