"My
country is the world. My religion is to do good."
-Thomas Paine
Key poverty-related issues:
- Respiratory tract infections, malnutrition, anemia and parasitic infections represent common health threats.
- Poor families often live in shacks made of scrap materials, such as cardboard, tin sheets, thatched grass or bamboo. Depending on the location, many homes have dirt floors, no plumbing and no electricity.
- Many children are unable to attend school because their families cannot afford required supplies, uniforms and tuition. One child out of three will not reach the fifth grade.
