Key poverty-related issues:

  • In November 1998, Hurricane Mitch devastated Honduras, leaving over 5,700 people dead and over 12,000 injured.

  • Parasitic infections, skin diseases, acute diarrhea and respiratory tract infections represent common health threats.

  • Less than half the children enrolled in primary school will graduate to secondary school. No government preschool programs are provided. More than 40 percent of the population is illiterate.
