"My country is the world. My religion is to do good."

-Thomas Paine

Key poverty-related issues:

  • Respiratory tract infections, parasitic infections, malnutrition and acute diarrhea represent common health threats.

  • There is a severe shortage of schools, especially in rural areas. Many poor families cannot afford necessary supplies, uniforms or fees. Only 25 percent of children are enrolled in secondary school. Only 56 percent of adults are literate.

  • Poor families often live in homes made of mud, adobe brick or wood. Typically, houses have dirt floors with one room to serve as the sleeping, eating and living area. In urban slums, overcrowding is an additional problem.
