Over Halfway to Our Goal for the Philippines Project. Small Projects a Success. Visit the Real Aura's House.
Dear Aura's House Donors, Friends, and Supporters,
Phew. It feels like a years worth of news happened in March alone. Where to start?
Well, first, as of April 1, 2006 we are more than halfway to our goal
for the Philippines Classroom Project. with $4214 raised so far! At the start of March, we had a successful fundraiser with William Paterson University Art Students in New Jersey. Over 200 students, faculty, and staff showed up and ate $800 worth of food. It was a great social event and we raised close to $300 in a short amount of time. Check out the photos from this event. Also, thanks to Aura's House partner Mike Epler, his company Countrywide matched an earlier $800 donation he made around Christmas. Hopefully in the near future, Christian Capin (8) and over 4,000 of his classmates in Manila, the Philippines will have adequate school facilities to study in.
Also this past month, not only did we get the photos from finished Small Project #1 for Levy in the Philippines, but we completed two other Small Projects: Small Project #2 for Luis in Guatemala and Small Project #3 for Cindy in the Philippines. We've even launched a new Small Project on 3/26/06 for Kenci Julissa and her family in Honduras. They live in a small one-room hut and own only one bed and have no electricity, kitchen, or toilet facilities. Our goal is to raise $500 to buy Kenci and her family beds, furniture, food rations, vitamins, and supplies. Visit this Small Project. Only $295 left to raise as of 4/1/06.
And finally, the biggest thing to happen in March, at least for me...was that I finally got to meet my sponsored child Aura Yesenia Solis Hernandez (12) of Guatemala! That's right. Aura's House Partner, Anastasia Yecke and myself took to the skies and found ourselves visiting Aura's real house in Guatemala and also the home this website helped build for the Rojas Family of Honduras. Many of our donors and volunteers kept up with Kristen and Ana's misadventures day to day in our online travel journal. You can now also see the photos here. Video clips are also coming soon.
All in all, it was an amazing month. Special thanks to Mike Epler, Christina Sidoti, and Christina Vermeal who helped out so much with the site while Ana and I were away. And thanks to all our visitors for keeping up with our projects and helping so many deserving families with small donations that add up fast.
Best wishes and Happy April, Kristen Palana and the Aura's House Team

Aura's House Small Projects Help Four Needy Families and Counting..

Levy (6) with a pink bunny and her family in the Philippines celebrate as they were surprised with $500 worth of furniture, supplies, and toys.
Levy was featured in Small Project #1. Her sponsor, Liz King of Sydney, Australia used the webpage at Aura's House to mobilize friends, family, and strangers to give her sponsored child and family a much needed boost. Check out the photos Children International sent us of what they received here.
So far, in March alone, we were able to finish raising $500 for Small Project #2 that featured Luis (9) and family of Guatemala. His sponsor is Amalia Marshall of the UK.

Also in March (in record time no less), Kate Rarick of Tennessee with the help of matching funds from AH Partner Anastasia Yecke were able to raise $500 for Cindy (12) of Legaspi City, Philippines. Visit this project.
We'll post the photos of what both previous featured Small Projects families got as soon as we receive them.
Now, as of March 26, 2006, we have a new Small Project
for Kenci (6) and her family in Honduras. Cindy W. of Wisconsin is her sponsor and aims to raise $500 for furniture, beds, food rations, and supplies. Only $295 left to raise as of 4/1/06.

April's Featured Volunteer and Donor

Christina Vermeal, New Jersey.

Christina in China this past summer.
------------------------------------------
Special thanks to Christina for her tireless efforts in taking photos at our Baja Fresh Fundraiser, making countless web photo galleries, and being our right-hand web woman helping to get the site current and online. This newsletter would not have been possible without her help. What will we do without you when your internship ends in a few weeks?

Christina writes :
"Hello, my name is Christina Vermeal. In the past, I have worked with a few organizations that try to help people. These events include the adult handicapped events, the Ridgefield Unico, and playing the trumpet with the Memory Makers Orchestra of New Jersey. The Memory Makers Orchestra plays mostly Big Band Music and actively volunteers at adult communities and assisted living centers. We try to bring the music and the memories back to people.
I am a senior at William Paterson University. In the summer of 2005, I studied in China with other students. I will never forget the beautiful sites as well as the countryside and the people that I met.
I
first learned of Aura's House when I started Web Design I with Kristen in the Fall of 2005. I was immediately drawn to the site and all the wonderful accomplishments that they have been able to fulfill.
Previously I had made donations to different organizations but did not see a way for myself to be able to become more actively involved. Later I felt lucky for the opportunity to intern with Kristen and thrilled to have the opportunity to be a small part of Aura's House. I feel grateful that I might one day know that I had even a small part in something that might be such a huge part of someone else’s life.
I hope that Kristen and all those involved at Aura’s House know that not only are they an inspiration to those they have strived to help but to people like myself as well."

On the Road in Guatemala and Honduras
by Anastasia Yecke
The long-awaited "Aura's House Central American Adventure" took place March 11-19 as Kristen and Anastasia flew first to Guatemala, then Honduras to visit several of the families our donors have helped. The first stop was Aura's house on the outskirts of Guatemala City. Kristen and Aura met at last! The family warmed our hearts with their kind, open manner and generous hospitality. We were pleasantly surprised to see that Aura's father finished the house in a beautiful white plaster. Kristen was a bit under the weather that day (understatement!) but luckily she had recovered by the next day as we took the girls in the family to Antigua for shopping, sightseeing, and a nice lunch.
Next stop: San Pedro Sula, Honduras, where it was Ana's turn to get sick...! Thankfully hers was also short-lived. Kristen and Ana met the Rojas family and got a tour of their new home. After a side trip to the Mayan ruins of Copan, the girls returned to San Pedro where Ana got to meet her sponsored child Keyla and take her shopping for a quinceanera (15th birthday) dress. The next day they decorated Keyla's house and threw her a birthday party she'll never forget!
To read about the trip in more detail (including a psycho clown, the gringa-hating dog who bit Ana, Kristen's dancing macaw, and our thoughts/feelings throughout the trip), check out our photos and travel journal here.

We're still waiting on news from the Zambia School project as well as photos from Small Projects 2 and 3. To keep up with any new developments, please check out our Community Forums for news and updates. Don't forget to stop in and introduce yourself.
Our Art Contest is accepting entries only until April 30. If you or someone you know is a high school art student, please let them know about this great portfolio building opportunity.
We're also always looking for people to help out with fundraising, design, graphics, promotions, and keeping the site going. Interested? Please contact Kristen (kpalana@aurashouse.com) if you have any comments, ideas, questions, or suggestions. Volunteer Job Positions can be found here. |
